Bsn University
The common nursing qualifications are LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and RN Registered Nurse). There are three different academic paths leading to these certifications. The LPN qualification requires a diploma in nursing studies and the LPN training program usually takes a year.
The minimum requirement to be a Registered Nurse is either an ADN or BSN certification. The ADN is an associate degree in nursing, and requires two years of nursing studies. The BSN is a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and is usually a prerequisite for professional nursing practice.
A BSN certification certainly provides a competitive edge when it comes to job promotions and career advancement. BSN graduates are trained in leadership and management skills, which certainly help them in moving to managerial positions.
BSN universities offer BSN programs which are usually four to five year programs. Options are provided for those with associate degrees to apply for exemptions, thus reducing the time required to complete the program and obtain the BSN qualification. Entry requirements for the BSN program vary depending on the program and the university. Some BSN universities require a high school diploma with an associate degree in Nursing or a three year nursing diploma.
The typical BSN degree program covers topics such as anatomy and physiology, nursing management, pharmacology, nutrition and health, professional nursing, psychology and microbiology lab. The first and second years of the BSN program provide an overview of nursing, specialized branches in nursing and general education. The final two years cover nursing courses such as nursing competencies and situations; a module on leadership and resource management is often included.
Besides theoretical knowledge and concepts, the students are provided clinical training in hospital and community environments. At least 50% of the program is hands-on training under the supervision of the instructor or faculty members.
The accelerated BSN degree program is offered by many BSN universities. The student can complete the BSN program within 12 to 20 months. However the entry condition is stricter, requiring at least a 3.0 GPA.
